One of the world's premier water sports events is the 26-year old Highland Spring HIHO, a seven-day windsurfing adventure and stage race that visits multiple islands in the British Virgin Islands. The 2010 event, set for June 26-July 4, starts and finishes at the Moorings resort marina on Tortola.
Inter-Island racing is one of the features that attracts windsurfers from all over the world (last year's field included entrants from 14 countries). Starting at the Moorings resort property on Tortola, the Highland Spring HIHO fleet sprints up to the top of the BVI's, then spends the week coming back downwind. Racers can expect to cover nearly 100-miles of racing as they wind their way through the British Virgin Islands.
A fleet of captained Moorings catamarans serves as mobile homes for all participants. Along the way it covers and stops at Anegada, Virgin Gorda, Eustatia, Bellamy Cay, Peter Island, Cooper Island, Sandy Cay (National Park), Norman Island, Jost Van Dyke and Little Thatch, and features world class sailing and boarding plus great parties at every stop.
Each day there will separate starts for each class, and separate courses. The fleets will meet at lunch which is always on a beautiful beach. Typically there is no racing in the afternoon leaving all participants the opportunity to participate in other watersports, or just relax. The biggest fleet is the one of the BIC Techno 148. This is the best board to do such a trip : easy to plane, very fast in light to medium wind, lots of volume to go though the lulls, it can carry up to 11 m2 sails...
Windsurfing pro and Highland Spring HIHO 2008 Champion Wilhelm Schurmann from Brazil will return to reclaim his crown.
There is a detailed itinerary for the event which can be found on the event's website, but with all true outdoor adventure events, it is more of a guide and is subject to change for logistical reasons such as weather conditions.
