The Highland Spring HIHO is the most stunningly beautiful long distance race that has ever existed. Imagine a 100 mile raid where you make your way through the natural wilderness of the Virgin Islands in the Caribbean. Lasting a week in all, the daily 20 mile stages take you from island to island, and in the evening you check into your 45 foot catamaran floating mobile hotel for a good night's sleep.
Paradise beaches and ideal conditions (sea and air at 28 °, 12 - 20 knot wind guaranteed), is the menu awaiting you. There's a range of age categories you can race in : Juniors (under 18), Mens (18 - 34 yrs), Masters (35 - 44 yrs), Grand Masters (45 - 54 yrs), Super Masters (55 yrs and over) and a women's category combining all the age groups.
The races divide into various categories, but the mono-type Techno 148 is the most interesting, with racers competing on identical rigs, and attracts the largest number of entrants. The Techno 148 is the board best suited to these conditions of distance racing in medium strength wind : early planing, can handle a range of sail sizes and delivers great performance in every direction. But you'll have to reserve your Bic sport board yourself on the HIHO website.
As for the evening action, this particular long distance/crossing event happens in a spirit of good fun and island ambiance. An evening cocktail party at the end of every stage...against a backdrop of coconut palms. And we even look after the people -accompanying you on your trip : your friends or family who aren't involved in the daily racing will have plenty to occupy their time ! On the programme : scuba diving, beginner windsurfing classes, sea fishing, and a host of other activities...
